Mieskuoro Sirkat

The history section is not yet available in English, sorry. But here are some nice pictures from the very first years of our choir.

Jyväskylä, the native town of Finnish choir music

At that time this was our town orchestra.

In those days Finland was still under Russian regime (we achieved our independence in 1917). Perhaps due to that fact, special singing festivals were organized in Jyväskylä and they were very popular and patriotic in spirit.

This wooden out door stage was designed by architect and lector Yrjö Blomstedt (one of the founders of our choir). Its style was jugend (Art Nouveau) and it was build as a head stage of 1899 song festivals.

This is the first picture of our choir. Here singers are practicing at G.A. Stoore's home.

Kalasaaren rantapaviljonkiThe beach park restaurant.

This is where our choir was founded in 1899. It was named as "Sirkat" (= grasshoppers) according to one of the songs in its first appearance. This song has always been our theme song.

Hotelli WHotel Wahlgren

Hotel Wahlgren is still remaining in Jyväskylä. It has a special place in our heart because the early singers usually gathered there and had their own cabinet on the third floor. The cabinet's walls are filled with humorous paintings of those "wet" rejoicings.

In summer time those early days Sirkat liked very much sailing to lake Päijänne. Also they liked fishing and hunting. In this picture they are on a cliff of a little island.
